If you've noticed the word authenticity popping up everywhere, you're not alone. It seems like everyone's waking up to the incredible benefits of being true to themselves and leading with honesty. Living an authentic life and leading with authenticity can attract the right opportunities, build trust and connection, and most importantly bring deep personal fulfillment.
But how do you actually discover your truest, most authentic self? It starts with a little self-reflection and a lot of soul-searching.
Here are some key steps to help you find your authentic self:
Uncover your passions: Take the time to discover what truly lights a fire within you. Identify the activities, causes, or interests that bring you joy and make you feel alive. For example, after losing my job, I reclaimed my love for baking and followed that through to a business that reflected my most authentic self, Sprinkles Cupcakes.
Identify your core values: Core values are the guiding principles that define who you are. Pinpoint the values that resonate deeply with you and prioritize them in your decision-making. In the wake of 9/11 I wanted to bring more connection to a fractured world through the joy and celebration of a freshly baked cupcake.
Embrace your uniqueness: Let go of the need to conform to societal standards. Celebrate your individuality and the qualities that make you stand out from the crowd. Everyone around me thought I was crazy for leaving a lucrative corporate path to follow my passion, but being true to myself led to the most rewarding opportunity of my life.
Share your story: Authentic leaders aren't afraid to be vulnerable and transparent. Share your journey, including the challenges, triumphs, and lessons you've learned along the way. Your story can inspire others and create meaningful connections. I stood behind the counter every day at Sprinkles sharing my story about the risk I took leaving my corporate path to pursue my passion for baking. My story resonated deeply with customers and strengthened their connection to the brand.
Cultivate emotional intelligence: Develop awareness of your own emotions and those of others. Practice empathy, active listening, and understanding different perspectives. This enhances your authenticity as a leader and fosters deeper connections.
Build genuine connections: Foster meaningful relationships with your team, colleagues, and stakeholders. Show appreciation, be approachable, and encourage open communication. Building my team at Sprinkles felt easy and natural because I led with an authentic enthusiasm for what we were creating.
Embrace continual growth: Remember that authenticity is a journey, not a destination. Commit to ongoing personal growth and learning. Be open to feedback and use it as a catalyst for self-improvement. Sprinkles was the beginning of my journey, but as I grow Pizzana and invest in other businesses I continue to lean into my interests and enthusiasms. Authenticity will continue to evolve as you evolve.
Embrace your uniqueness, cultivate meaningful connections, and continue growing. By leading with authenticity, you empower yourself to be the best version of who you truly are. Let authenticity be your guide and witness the incredible impact it can have on yourself and those around you.
